English Premier League

Sunday, 8th February, 14:05 UK Time

Newcastle’s decision to keep John Carver in the manager’s seat until the end of the season took some people by surprise, but it’s good to see loyalty being rewarded in the Premier League, an institution so often derided for being all about money and trying to buy instant success. The club were rewarded last weekend by an excellent 3-0 win at Hull City, a victory that dragged The Magpies that bit further away from the relegation dog-fight.

This week, Newcastle should pick up three more vital points against a talented but inconsistent Stoke City side. Mark Hughes’s side are more than capable of beating anyone on their day, but even the most optimistic Potters fans will admit that their day doesn’t come along as often as they’d like. A long trip to St James’s Park in the middle of a cold spell doesn’t exactly fill the heart with promise.

These two sides are already looking like the epitome of mid-table mediocrity this season, in that neither of them is good enough to challenge for a place in Europe or bad enough to be drawn into a relegation battle. This is a good thing because both clubs bring something to the smorgasbord of Premier League life, and we want them back here again next season. I think this will be a close game, and I expect Newcastle to win.

Newcastle United to win at home to Stoke City. Grab them at 2.29.
