English FA Cup

Sunday, 4th January, 15:00 UK Time

The good news for Sheffield Wednesday fans is that Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini will undoubtedly field some second string players for this cup-tie. The bad news is that the majority of City’s reserves are good enough to play in any league in Europe. Even if the boss gives a game to anyone with less than ten league starts, for example, his side could still include the likes of Bacary Sagna, Aleksander Kolarov, Stevan Jovetic, Frank Lampard and Edin Dzeko.

Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand have a smaller squad and far less money, of course. A cup run would mean the world to the club, but you just can’t see it happening this year. Being drawn away to a club like Manchester City is a little like hearing your lottery numbers being announced just before you realise that you didn’t buy a ticket this week. It’s a hard life when you’re not in the Premier League.

Even if Pellegrini picks a relatively weakened squad, even if Sheffield Wednesday’s players play their hearts out from minute one and even if Venus and Mars are aligned in a particularly advantageous way at 3pm on Sunday, all I can see is a home win. I love the romance of the cup, but I can’t there being any at the Etihad this weekend.

Manchester City to win at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Grab them at 1.14.
