Betting Advice - How To Hedge Your Bets

Bet selection, naturally, is dependent on the prices or odds, and the stake the punter is willing to gamble.

However, a simple review of some types of multi selection betting may make you reassess when they are best ultilised. With some simple mathematics it is very easy to calculate the number of doubles, trebles and even fourfolds in the bet and to understand the way in which any winnings are worked out.

While one bet accumulators can promise very big rewards for small stakes, they invariably end up in the loser's pile.

This is basically due to the fact that as the number of selections increases, the greater number of result combinations are created. Even in a relatively small four accumulator there are 81 different result combinations.

The maths is simple: The three possible results in a match (home win, draw and away win) are multiplied by the same number three more times which accounts for the other selections. ) eg 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81.

The number of possibilities is an illustration of just how favourable conditions are for the bookmaker, independent of team selection and odds. It only takes one team to concede a last minute goal and the whole bet goes down. In addition a winning fourfold is likely to include short priced teams which obviously devalues any winning amounts.

Perhaps the most common multi selection bets involve three or four selections, and any more than six selections would increase dramatically the number of bets if one wanted to cover all the doubles, threefolds and fourfolds etc.

The Patent

The three selection bet, commonly known as the patent consists of seven bets. There are three single bets on each selection, three double bets (3 x 2 / 2 x 1) and one threefold bet or accumulator. Naturally, if only one selection wins, only one of the bets wins. If two bets win then there are three winning bets (the two singles and double). And of course if all three come in there are two more doubles and the threefold.

A trixie is a three selection bet without the singles and therefore consists of four bets.

The Yankee and Lucky 15

skybet.com Both of these bets require four selections. There are 11 bets in a yankee, 6 doubles (4 x 3 / 2 x 1) 4 trebles 4 x 3 x 2 / 3 x 2 x 1 ) and an accumulator. The Lucky 15 is the same bet, but also includes the 4 single bets.

Lucky 31

This bet involves five selections and consists of 5 single bets, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, five fourfolds and an accumulator. The doubles and trebles can be calculated following the same formula highlighted above.

In general, these type of bets favour selections where the odds are relatively high. It certainly would not be recommended to select four or five odds on teams in a multi selection bet. In this situation a one bet accumulator is the best option. However it is important to remember that each bet can be weighted differently in order to maximise potential return. In a patent for example, the single bets could be staked higher than the doubles and treble. Taking to do a little maths before placing the bet can certainly improve your chances of selecting the right bet.
